Coaches Needed for Washtenaw Elementary Science Olympiad (WESO) - The 2017 Washtenaw Elementary Science Olympiad (WESO) has been announced and will take place on June 3rd at Pioneer High School.  This competition is open to grades 2-5.  A description of WESO and the events for 2017 are available in the links below:

The rules of Science Olympiad require an adult coach for each event in which we would like to participate.  In order to maximize the opportunities for our kids, please consider volunteering to coach an event.  No prior experience is required and plenty of support is provided by WESO in the form of teaching materials, workshops, subject matter experts etc.  Without coaches, there is no Science Olympiad!!

We will be holding an informational event for prospective coaches on Wednesday November 2nd at 6:30PM in the Multi Purpose Room.  Please plan to attend if you are interested in coaching.

If you would like to coach an event, or if you have any questions on WESO, please contact Tejas Rao and Head Coach at a2steam.weso@gmail.com.

HELP WANTED:

Dear Family Members,

This is our 3rd successful year of STEAM and the PTSO needs your help now more than ever. That's why your assistance is vital in our continued success.

The PTSO seeks your support to help in carving out fundraisers and committees in order to create a supportive culture for the success of our entire school.

As a result, based on the size and needs of the school, we urge each family to volunteer approximately 8 hours per school year.  Please take this opportunity now to click the link and offer your help and especially your much needed time.  Thank You.

Teacher Feature:

Welcome to our 2nd installment of our blog series "Teacher Feature"

Meet Jean Wilson 6th grade teacher and fellow STEAM parent

Mrs. Jean Wilson

We have a sink! The sixth grade science lab needed a sink, and we used Project Based Learning to make it happen. We researched greywater, which is the water from sinks, showers and washing machines (not toilets!), to learn about how we could use water wisely. We also used our engineering skills to design and revise our sink. We are so happy to be able to wash our hands and reuse the water for our indoor salad garden. It is filtered by our own filtration system to make sure all the soap is removed. Students learned about the scientific process by asking questions, investigating, designing models and publishing results. This was a wonderful project with a very useful product!

Supporting Education
A2 STEAM @ Northside
Annual Drive

You probably already know that PTSO = Parent Teacher Student Organization, but did you know that one of the PTSO primary functions is to raise funds for the school?

At A2 STEAM @ Northside, students have additional opportunities that enrich their educational experience.  From Expos to field trips, we want all of our children to share in these experiences; your PTSO raises funds to support such opportunities.  We cannot do this without your support.  Some schools hold events such as sales of baked goods and gift wrap; we are working to keep the number of these events to a minimum while still supporting high quality educational experiences at our school.

Here are some examples of how your PTSO funds support our children's educational needs:

  • Field Trips ($20,000):  Last year your PTSO spent $10,000 on field trips.  A significant portion of this funding provided transportation to off-campus venues.  We want to continue to offer these unique, Project Based Learning (PBL) field trips that help our kids explore and contribute to their surrounding community. With the growing population at A2 STEAM, we have increased our budget this year in this area.
Field Trip Cost Per Student Breakdown
 Grades K-3 $25 per student
Grades 4-5 $40 per student
Grades 6-8 $60 per student

  • Expo Grants ($2,250):  Teachers often need extra materials for Expo projects.  Your PTSO helps to provide additional funding to support the students’ curriculum and creativity.
  • Classroom Materials ($3,200):  We want to ensure that teachers are not paying out of their own pockets for classroom materials; we provide reimbursement for items that support Project Based Learning (PBL).

Please donate today to support the above activities or simply to express appreciation for having nothing to buy, sell, or do!. Your PTSO asks that you only contribute what you can afford; If your family can afford to give more, please consider doing so as these funds will benefit other A2 STEAM families.

*Please note - Additional fundraising will be necessary to fund the costs of field trips and other activities throughout the school year that are not covered by the Annual Drive.

1st Installment of Teacher Feature

Welcome to the First Installment of our Blog Series!

Teacher Feature

Stacey Plott 3rd Grade :

 Stacey Plott's profile photo

"Project Based Learning is the most amazing way for students to learn. My third grade students last year impressed me daily with their ability to collaborate, problem solve and think critically. Our Turbulent Migration project was successful because of the research, hard work and preparation the students put in.  Students were on both sides of the issue and were able to persuade our Expo audience into a 50/50 split, showing both sides delivered a strong argument.  I have another great group of students this year, and I look forward to all of the success they will have!"

Thank you Stacey Plott for all your hard work!!!

Northside Community Church Parking
We have been fortunate to have both churches on either side of our school allow us to use their parking lots.  We understand that parking is a challenge. This announcement is pertaining to the Northside Community Church on Barton. This is establishment has supported Northside Elementary for many years but if we continue to ignore their guidelines for parking WE WILL LOSE THE PRIVILEGE!!!  In an email sent to Principal Fitzgibbons please see the following:

You are welcome to use the parking lot at Northside Community Church (across from the school) for;
Morning drop off and afternoon pick up of children
Evening school events (except as noted below)
NOTE:
  1. Please do NOT use our lot on Thursday evenings
  2. Use ONLY the designated parking spaces - Do NOT park in the drive way
  3. DO NOT park in the 3 spaces marked: ‘CHURCH PARKING ONLY’ at any time
  4. Our ‘CHURCH EVENT ONLY’ sign indicates that we have an event at that time and outside parking is not allowed.
  5. If it has snowed, our plow needs to get into the lot to clean it out.Parking is only allowed on those days for as long as it takes to pick up or drop off children.
The spots directly in front of the church are to be kept clear.  We have been advised of this by the fire marshal.  We have an arrangement with Brewer’s Towing to remove unauthorized vehicles from our lot if we call them.  We don’t want to do this but this space must be kept clear.
We hope to continue communications with administration and parents.  Have a great year!

Remember to sign up for Bloomz, this is an excellent resource as a one stop shop communication for the entire school.  PTSO will now be using this as a means of communication in addition to school messenger as well and can be used from your PC and/or smartphone.  There is a convenient tutorial on how to use Bloomz  once your account is setup. Make sure you join the PTO’s and your child’s teacher group. The PTO invite code is JW6PWK.  (It works very similar to facebook, very user friendly) If your students classroom is still working on creating their group, no need to worry. You can still see info from the PTO and our Lead Teacher Brooke Stidham.
  • Amazon Smiles
In addition to the already established amazing ways (box tops etc.) to raise funds easily is Amazon Smiles.  When you shop on Amazon just register your recipient to Northside Elementary PTO Ann Arbor and a percentage of the proceeds will go directly to our school.  Smile - Amazon.com
